The working meeting was dedicated to discussions on the Regional Groundwater Management Initiative in Central Asia (RGWMI), implemented by the Government of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The initiative aims to address growing challenges related to the rational use, protection, and sustainable management of groundwater resources in the region. The programme builds on the outcomes of the previously implemented GGRETA project and forms an integral part of the Swiss Blue Peace Central Asia programme, which focuses on strengthening water security and promoting regional cooperation.
During the discussions, key priorities of the RGWMI were reviewed, including the development of interstate cooperation, improvement of groundwater governance and monitoring systems, strengthening scientific and technical capacities, expanding data and knowledge exchange, as well as supporting legal and institutional reforms.
Particular attention was given to the importance of raising public awareness of the role of groundwater, the risks of its depletion and contamination, and the need to engage local communities and stakeholders in sustainable water resources management processes.
The role of academic and research institutions was especially emphasized, notably in building a robust scientific evidence base, conducting applied research, developing educational and awareness-raising components of the initiative, and preparing analytical and methodological materials.
As a result of the meeting, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in continuing the dialogue and further exploring potential forms of cooperation involving the Institute within the framework of the regional initiative.
