On 23 June 2026, the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan hosted the opening of the scientific-practical conference entitled “Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR): Strengthening Ecological Resilience in the Context of Climate Change.” The event is organized in cooperation with the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan and the Aga Khan Foundation in Tajikistan and will take place from 23 to 26 June 2026.

The conference was officially opened by Ilhom Temur Amonzoda, Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, who emphasized the importance of strengthening scientific cooperation, promoting modern scientific achievements in climate change adaptation, and applying nature-based solutions to reduce disaster risks. He noted that, in the context of climate change, the conservation of ecosystems and the sustainable management of natural resources are among the key priorities of the state policy of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The conference brings together representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, government ministries and agencies, research institutions, international organizations, civil society organizations, young scientists, and students.

During the event, Aminjon Abduljabbor Gulakhmadzoda, Director of the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, delivered a presentation highlighting the significance of the Eco-DRR approach as an effective tool for enhancing ecological resilience and reducing the vulnerability of communities and infrastructure to climate-related hazards.

The plenary session focused on a range of topics, including the role of Tajikistan’s mountain ecosystems in disaster risk reduction, the impacts of climate change on water resources, climate risk management, and the development of regional early warning systems.

The main objective of the conference and training seminar is to strengthen the country's scientific, technical, and institutional capacities for integrating Eco-DRR approaches and climate change adaptation measures into natural resource management and disaster risk reduction policies and practices.

The organizers expect that the outcomes of the event will contribute to enhanced scientific and inter-agency cooperation, improved professional capacities of specialists, wider application of modern GIS and remote sensing technologies, and the development of evidence-based recommendations for integrating Eco-DRR approaches into national strategies and development programs.
