Breaking News

On May 25, 2026, as part of the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development" 2018–2028, the Institute of Water Problems, Hydropower and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan is hosting the Forum "The NEXUS Approach in Central Asia — Science, Policy and Practice".

The Forum brings together scientists, regional experts, international organizations and development partners to discuss one of the most pressing challenges of the region -  integrated and sustainable water resources management.

In Central Asia, the impacts of climate change, economic growth and increasing water demand are creating tensions between irrigation, hydropower, municipal water supply and environmental needs. At the same time, despite their critical importance, groundwater resources remain insufficiently addressed in national planning and policy.

Against this background, the Forum places particular emphasis on the conjunctive management of surface water and groundwater within the broader context of the NEXUS approach. Discussions cover not only technical aspects, but also issues of governance, regional cooperation, institutional development, financing, knowledge sharing, and the role of young professionals and women experts in the water sector.

It is expected that the outcomes of the Forum will contribute to strengthening regional dialogue and developing practical recommendations for further cooperation in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins.
